Plattform Lernende Systeme’s extended map provides an overview of Germany’s AI credentials
When the German Federal Government published its National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence a year ago, it provided a framework for establishing the international competitiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) made in Germany. To coincide with this, Germany’s federal states are also driving forward the development and application of AI. Putting the knowledge gained from research into practice is a vital factor in commercial success. The AI map (in German) created by Plattform Lernende Systeme – Germany’s platform for artificial intelligence – extends this initiative’s comprehensive overview of AI applications and research institutions in Germany, indicating the federal states’ strategic goals and the locations where regional transfer hubs are overseeing implementation.
How are federal states such as Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia and Schleswig-Holstein equipping themselves for the AI-based economy of the future? What course are the federal state governments setting, how are research results being applied, and where can companies of all sizes find local support for incorporating artificial intelligence into their business operations? The new “Strategien & Transfer” (strategies and transfer) tab of Plattform Lernende Systeme’s AI map provides relevant state-specific overviews.
The expansion of research, the networking of relevant academic, business and social stakeholders, and the transfer of knowledge to companies and the public are key areas where the federal states are driving technological development in the field of artificial intelligence. These areas are established in the digitalisation strategies of the individual federal states, with digital hubs and competence centres promoting dialogue between the academic and business worlds in practice.
Assistance with putting into practice
The extended AI map shows where companies can find local support and low-threshold advice. Germany’s twelve digital hubs offer participating partners the opportunity to work together with a view to overcoming current technological challenges and producing futureproof IT systems/products. The SME 4.0 Competence Centres act as regional, supplier-neutral points of contact, assisting SMEs and the trades with digitalisation. These centres are progressively recruiting AI trainers to advise on artificial intelligence. The trainers have already started work in Augsburg, Berlin, Darmstadt, Dortmund, Hanover, Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken, and also at the “Textil vernetzt” competence centre. The digital hubs and the SME 4.0 Competence Centres were both initiated by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
Research and applications at a glance
Plattform Lernende Systeme was established by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Its AI map provides a comprehensive overview of Germany’s AI credentials. The “Forschungsinstitutionen” (research institutions) tab currently lists around 150 institutions involved in technological and social issues relating to the development and application of artificial intelligence. Using a filter function, it is possible to ascertain, for example, whether institutions focus on image recognition, data management and analysis, human-machine interaction, speech and text comprehension, or robotics. Institutions conducting research into social issues relating to artificial intelligence are included alongside key technologies.
The “Anwendungen” (applications) tab currently covers approximately 650 applications and development projects involving the use of AI technologies at present or in the near future in Germany. Spanning all sectors, areas of use and sizes of company, these applications and projects range from AI-based medical assistance systems to robots for industrial production. They can be filtered not only according to sector and region, but also based on area of use, underlying AI technology and value-adding activity. Companies, institutes and universities that develop AI solutions can describe these solutions here for inclusion in the map.
